在歐美國家，小孩中一直流行著這個傳說：每當你掉一顆乳牙，你就要把這顆牙齒藏在枕頭下。夜晚，當你熟睡時，一個仙女或者一個精靈就會過來把牙齒取走，作為交換他們會送給你一枚金幣。

而小老鼠佩雷斯，我們姑且就叫他佩佩老鼠吧，就是在這個大環境下誕生了。

19 世紀，當時的西班牙國王阿方索十三世才剛滿 8 歲，有一天掉了一顆乳牙，於是，皇室就下令讓神父兼作家的路易斯·克羅瑪（Luis Coloma）創作一個小故事送給當時的「Buby」小國王（阿方索十三世的媽媽這樣叫他的兒子）。

故事中，佩佩老鼠一家就住在馬德里皇宮附近的一個甜品店的倉庫裡（而這裡就是目前佩佩老鼠博物館的所在地，馬德里 Calle Arenal 8）。每天晚上，佩佩老鼠會去偷偷拜訪還是小孩子的阿方索十三世，還有更重要的就是去那些窮人孩子的家裡，如果看到他們的枕頭下藏著掉下的牙齒，佩佩老鼠就會送給他們一塊金幣。

從那時候開始，幸福的西班牙兒童們不僅在聖誕節可以收到聖誕老人的禮物、三王節收到東方三王的禮物，而在他們掉牙的時候還能收到佩佩老鼠的金幣。
